The arrival of her first child soon after leaving school set Karlie James on course for a 12 year gap year. She started studying in Katherine next to her third child’s cot, until he was diagnosed with childhood cancer. She studied beside his bed in the chemo ward for 15 months. Now a single mother of four, she has continued to study in spite of school runs, financial strain and homelessness and this year is set to graduate as a doctor in the NT. Karlie’s positivity, persistence and resilience are obvious and her journey offers many insights valuable to educators and students.
